The Revoltella Museum in Trieste, an elegant urban residence in the Renaissance style, was built between 1854 and 1858, designed by Berlin architect F. Hitzig, at the behest of Baron Pasquale Revoltella. After his death in 1869, the property was turned into a museum and left to the city. The museum still retains its original furnishings, including inlaid floors, painted ceilings and stucco paneling, along with a valuable art collection that includes marble groups, historical scenes, landscapes and portraits from the 19th century. In later years, the museum expanded with the acquisition of Palazzo Brunner, which now houses one of Italy’s most important modern art collections, with works by artists such as Hayez, Fattori, Morandi, Fontana and many others.
