Traditional Music UNESCO Heritage

In the enchanting courtyard of Palazzo Locatelli, the male group Klapa Kastav performs traditional Dalmatian a cappella singing, which has been protected by UNESCO since 2012 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is a tradition that is still very much alive, often requiring no notation and perpetuated through listening and emulation. The group sings in a semicircle under the guidance of the first tenor, to whom the other voices adapt in search of the best combination. However, this is not a form of classical singing; on the contrary, it is sometimes guttural, nasal, or even falsetto. The themes of the songs concern scenes from everyday life, feelings, and popular sketches, as a living part of the cultural identity of these communities.
