Monastero della Castagnevizza – Nova Gorica

Chamber concert for voices and piano

In the monastery of Castagnevizza, chosen by King Charles X of Bourbon (1757-1836) as his final resting place, a concert evokes the atmosphere of early 19th-century Paris, when many Italian composers populated the capital with great music, not without provoking lively querelles between supporters of Italian opera and those of the French tradition. The centerpiece of this successful season was the Théâtre-Italien, which opened in 1801. directed by Gaspare Spontini and then by Ferdinando Paër, it welcomed new scores by Bellini, Donizetti (who wrote I puritani for this theater), Mercadante, but above all Rossini, who performed his last opera, Guglielmo Tell, here before devoting himself solely to chamber music and his gourmet passions.
